Enjoying an Evening Alone

I love my husband. He is my best friend in the world and I enjoy every moment we spend together. That said, when he's traveling, I do enjoy (and even look forward to) my alone time.  Following is my ritual for an evening alone. I hope this inspires you to take some time and treat yourself next time you have the evening to yourself. I look forward to this ritual every time. First, I make a dinner that requires little to no cleaning. I eat a very clean diet and I'm not really an "order-in" person, so I usually treat myself to an Amy's Organics rice crust pizza. Not only are they physically beautiful, but they are confident, talented, gracious, and exude an otherworldly quality that an outsider can only wonder about. When I was lucky enough to meet a maiko (geisha trainee) in Gion, I was taken aback by how regimented her life was. She was 100% dedicated to carrying on the traditional Japanese arts. They lack subtly and mystery and I feel that this gives their power away.   One of the first things that I noticed about...

What I Learned About Age & Beauty From Geisha

I recently celebrated my 40th birthday so naturally thoughts about age have crossed my mind.   I had been going through some photos this past week of my last trip to Kyoto. I came across the picture above featuring a beautiful miako (apprentice geisha) and a senior geisha. The timing was perfect – one of those lessons that life throws at you when you need it most.     In Kyoto I was lucky enough to attend a dinner where this miako and geisha entertained and were our hostesses for the evening. Of course most eyes were glued on the young miako who I believe was about 20. Her kimono was beyond exquisite. She was truly a living work...
