Wellness Tips for the Holiday Season

Almost all of us wake up the day after a holiday party feeling a bit “off”. This time of year, we tend to eat out of character, drink a bit more alcohol than usual, and often, water is forgotten.

The holiday season is a time to be enjoyed. Don’t deprive yourself. Try to balance things out by paying a little extra attention to self-care.

Following are my holiday wellness tips to keep you feeling your best. I suggest doing all, or as many of these as possible the day after you’ve indulged.

Warm Water and Lemon: This is a great way to start any day, but is particularly helpful after a night of eating and drinking. Lemon helps with liver detoxification and warm water gets things moving. Prepare a 16 oz. glass of warm water and squeeze in ¼ - ½ of a lemon. If you want to take it a step further, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper.

Green Tea: Drink green tea all day. It is a natural diuretic and super high in antioxidants. I find that green tea always helps me feel better after eating too much.

Dry Brush: Dry brushing detoxifies by allowing lymph to flow freely. By dry brushing, you are stimulating your body’s own healing process. Dry brushing also gets the blood flowing which is a fantastic way to get rid of “brain fog” that comes after eating too much sugar.

Detox with the Luxury Bath Salts: Detox at least once a week with Amayori’s Luxury Bath Salts. Aside from a myriad of cleansing salts, Luxury Bath Salts contain sea kelp. When combined with warm water, kelp is a potent detoxifier. Make the bath water as warm as you can tolerate and rinse your body when finished. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water during and after the bath.

A Salad a Day: Eat what you want at holiday parties – this is a time to have fun. Balance it out by substituting a large salad for one meal a day. You can pack this with healthy protein so it’s filling. Try something new everyday so that you begin to look forward to it. I love adding seasonal items such as mandarins or pear slivers to my salads.

Fill up with Vegetables First: When you are at a dinner party, try eating the healthy food first.

If You’ve Had Too Much to Drink: Diffuse peppermint oil. Or, get a small bottle to have on hand and simply open it up and breathe deeply. The scent of peppermint helps with headaches and stomach ailments while it helps clear your mind.

You can also try eating a persimmon. Though I have never tested this out myself, in Japan it is believed that alcohol binds itself to the high amount of tannins present in persimmons, thus helping with detoxification.

As I’ve said, the Holidays are a time to celebrate. Don’t deprive yourself. At the same time, I would like us all to wake up everyday and feel great about our choices and our health.
