How to Take a Japanese Bath at Home (Part 1): Setting Up

Read our complete guide to the Japanese bath at home by clicking here. Japanese bathing isn’t just about its amazing skin and health benefits. Above all, it is about mindfulness, deep relaxation, and letting go of your cares of the day. One of the things that struck me most upon my first Japanese bath experience was the vibe. There is something magical about the water, the scent of hinoki cypress (a wood often used to make Japanese baths), the minimalism – all of these elements create a sensorial experience that allows one to connect with themselves on a level that they never thought possible. One of the most important parts of a relaxing bath is setting up beforehand. After doing...

An Easy Weekend Morning Ritual

Little moments of tranquility can have such a rejuvenating impact on our lives. There are so many ways to make everyday moments more beautiful and mindful. All that’s required is a bit of effort, creativity, and intention. I love to read after I meditate and exercise on weekend mornings. I just sit on my couch for 30 minutes or so and read whatever book currently is holding my attention, or I pick a random book and just dive in. What makes this moment go from “reading on the couch” to a weekend ritual is this: Tea: I always make a cup of tea to sit down and read with. Tea stops us and takes us out of the day-to-day. I...

Relaxing with the Snow Onsen

Sometimes I come across little pockets of joy in life and am so grateful to be able to have a way to share them with you. Recently I was relaxing after a bath with The Snow Onsen Silk Gauze Shiso Bath Oil. I was reading a book I recently ordered, Snow Country written by Yasunari Kawabata. The story take place in Japan’s upper most northern region where the snow is known to blanket the entire area for months on end, hence the area's nickname, Snow Country. The story tells of a well to do man who is visiting a hot springs resort alone and his love affair with a younger geisha. Though the geisha is only twenty, there is a...

Enjoying an Evening Alone

I love my husband. He is my best friend in the world and I enjoy every moment we spend together. That said, when he's traveling, I do enjoy (and even look forward to) my alone time.  Following is my ritual for an evening alone. I hope this inspires you to take some time and treat yourself next time you have the evening to yourself. I look forward to this ritual every time. First, I make a dinner that requires little to no cleaning. I eat a very clean diet and I'm not really an "order-in" person, so I usually treat myself to an Amy's Organics rice crust pizza. The key is to keep it easy but delicious. Afterwards I'll have my...

How to Take a Relaxing Summer Nap

I love a nice weekend nap during any season, but there is something especially languorous and deeply relaxing about a summer nap. They are wonderful for replenishing the body and mind after a day in the hot sun. A late afternoon summer nap allows us to wind down and refresh ourselves which prepares us for a fun summer evening. When I get home after being out in the sun I will always take a shower. Before taking a nap, I will drink a large glass of water. Sometimes it’s hard to notice how dehydrated the sun makes us. Drinking a glass of water before a nap will help you wake up easier. I find if I don’t do this, I...
